ScoutWing is a California startup that provides drone-based precision scouting in farms, reduces repetitive hours walking through the field, and detects crop stress earlier than human eyes.
American farmers have seen labor shortages and inflationary pressures since COVID-19. We are here to help you work smarter.
Precision scouting rids the mundane part of crop scouting, locating problems directly at low cost so humans can focus on diagnosing and solving the problem. We use multispectral cameras that see the NIR band which detects crop stress at cm resolution, thousand folds higher than satellite capabilities.
Digitization also boosts productivity, here are some extra use cases:
Knowing if and where a problem is present. So you can sleep better or work smarter.
Tracking the progression of issues, automating the discovery of common problems in your field with computer vision.
Having an abundance of evidence would help with insurance filing.
Drone scouting costs are now on par compared to human scouting, satellite is still a magnitude more cheaper.
The latest satellite can only do 10m, which can only detect major issues or prescribe VRT maps. But being able to see at a cm resolution enables remote diagnosis of some problems.
Satellite: $0.1/acre, 10m, RGB + NIR, detect only
Drone: $0.6-1/acre, 1cm, RGB + NIR, detect & some diagnosis
Human: $1-2/acre, -, RGB only, detect & diagnose
Drone costs are also dropping, we project prices to reach $0.2-0.5 in the next 5 years.
With inflating human labor costs, this transition is necessary help your farm make a profit.
Self-operation may appear cheaper but have invisible risks that translates into invisible costs. By letting us operate, we take on these risks and invest our profits to control these risks down the road.
Costs for you to operate: pilot certification, drone, registration, insurance, data storage, servers, and keeping up to date with FAA regulations.
Risks
Drone accidents
Insurance filing and FAA reports are a headache. Getting another drone could take weeks, meaning no data until then.
Our fleet of professionally trained pilots and drones ensures critical data is provided to you on time, subject to weather conditions of course. Most of our drone pilots have manned aircraft training, we take safety seriously.
Upcoming DJI Ban
United States legislation could ban import of DJI or impose heavy tariffs in the near future.
ScoutWing is developing drones specifically for agriculture surveys to eliminate these operational risks, made and designed in California.
Weather
Most drones are only rated to fly in dry sunny days, causing data outages in rainy or snowy seasons.
We aim to develop waterproof drones that can provide year-round surveys as long as winds aren't severe.
We are based in Emeryville and Berkeley.
Service Area is currently limited to Northern California, including:
1. Napa & Sonoma Valley Vineyards
2. Gilroy Garlic Fields
3. Salinas Lettuce Fields
If you are a large farm in Central Valley, please ask us for a custom quote. We will operate there soon.
Quotes are for areas listed on the left, or farms close to Bay Area. Frequency monthly or more.
<50 acres: $1.3/acre
50-75 acres: $1.15/acre
75-150 acres: $1.1/acre
